Prof. Dr. Cordelia Friesendorf, a member of the prestigious Übersee-Club, attended the 100-year jubilee celebration hosted in the architecturally charming and historical premises of the concert hall Laeiszhalle. The Übersee-Club was founded by Hamburg’s banker and famed business citizen Max Warburg in 1922 who believed in the values of openness and trade.

The event was marked with several highlights, one of which was the speech delivered by Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of the Federal Republic of Germany, who reinforced the need of internationalization to sustain Germany’s economic strength in a pluralistic world as the destination for innovation. The speech by Hamburg’s Mayor Peter Tschentscher referred back to the principles and motivation of the Übersee-Club in sustaining Hamburg’s trading and maritime history.

A video message sent by Emmanuel Macron, President of France, congratulating the Club on it’s 100th birthday and a pun-filled delivery on why peace mattered from Hamburg’s prominent personality Udo Lindenberg rounded off the event. Kent Nagano, one of the world’s outstanding conductor for operatic and orchestral repertoire, and his team interspersed the entire event memorable musical pieces during the grand celebration.
