The Student Welcome Centre

Our Student Welcome Service welcomes you to SRH Campus Hamburg. We are your first point of contact when you start your studies at SRH and are happy to help you with any questions you may have. Our main concern is to help you get a smooth start to your studies at SRH Campus Hamburg.

Important: If you haven't done it before, please get in touch with the German Embassy/Consulate in your home country in order to ask about the student visa requirements and to book an appointment.

CASE 1: No health insurance yet and under 30?

If yes,

  • STEP 1: sign up for a German student insurance plan either public or private.
  • STEP 2a: If you have a public German insurance plan (e.g. AOK, TK, Barmer, etc.) submit an insurance confirmation to your admissions officer OR
  • STEP 2b: if you have a private German insurance plan (e.g. Allianz, Mawista, HanseMerkur, etc.) contact a public German insurance provider & ask for a waiver. Submit the waiver & your private insurance confirmation to your admissions officer.

CASE 2: No health insurance yet and over 30?

If yes,

  • STEP 1: sign up for a German student insurance plan, which must be private. Public insurance is not possible to obtain according to the Social Law.
  • STEP 2: if you have a private German insurance plan contact a public German insurance provider & ask for a waiver. Submit the waiver & your private insurance confirmation to your admissions officer.

CASE 3: public / private insurance from another country

You (no matter which age) have your public/private insurance (no travel insurance) from another country (e.g. European Health Insurance Card EHIC, AT11 or similar proof of social security agreement between Germany and your home country)?

If yes,

  • STEP 1: no need to purchase a private or public German insurance plan.
  • STEP 2: if you have your own insurance (which is considered to have a "private" insurance) contact a public German insurance provider & ask for a waiver. Submit the waiver & your private insurance confirmation to your admission officer.
  • ATTENTION: If you bring your own insurance plan from your home country, please check in advance if it fulfills German requirements.

Please be informed that SRH does not assess if your private insurance from your home country is sufficient to study in Germany or not. Please follow the steps for case 3 as mentioned above.

Tips

  • long process & you need patience
  • find yourself a provisional accommodation (hotel/hostel) for the first few weeks
  • finding an accommodation for 3 or 6 months is very common; finding an accommodation for the total length of your stay is rare; a lot of students move several times during their stay
  • use your SRH FB group in order to find roommates

Key Facts

  • SRH is NOT part of the public association "Studentenwerk" & applications for their student housing will be rejected
  • SRH does NOT have student housing
  • SRH does NOT provide accomodation services; if you need assistance you may contact the SRH agent listed in the Student Welcome Guide

To get in touch with your fellow students in advance, you can join one of the SRH Facebook groups. We will gladly tell you which groups are online.

To register you need your application number and the name of your study programme.

You must submit the following documents during the welcome week in order to receive your Student ID & Transportation Ticket:

  1. Original OR certified copy of your Bachelor degree and Certificate (Master/MBA students) or of your Secondary School Leaving Certificate (Bachelor students)
  2. Proof of Health Insurance (cf. STEP 3)
  3. if applicable: Missing Application Documents (cf. your study contract)
  4. if applicable: Student Visa/and or German Residence Permit (cf. STEP 2)

If you have already submitted everything to SRH, you do not need to submit it again.

Please submit it to your admission officer.

Transportation Ticket ("Semesterticket")

Your transportation ticket will be included in your Student ID Card.

Prepare Your First Tuition Fee Payment (not deposit).

Please be informed that the university will not issue any invoices.

Payments are due on the deadlines that are mentioned in the study contract. Please be informed that the security deposit that non-EU/EEA students have to pay for final admission will be deducted from the last three months of your tuition fee payment.

NEW: You can now use flywire to make international payments and to pay your tuition fees. Have a look at our website to learn more about flywire.

 

A pre-arrival info e-mail will be sent to you at least 1 month before your programme starts.

We generally recommend that you arrive in Hamburg about one week before orientation begins to have a few days to familiarise yourself with the City. Detailed plans for welcome week will be sent to you at least 1 week before orientation starts.

Class Schedule & Academic Information

You will receive your class schedule and all other important academic information during orientation from the Programme Director.

Student Buddies

Our Students’ Union assigns student buddies who assist the Student Welcome Centre. A student buddy is usually a second or third year student of the same study programme who assists first year students of all nationalities in having a smooth start to both their studies at our university and their life in Hamburg/Germany. Contact details of the buddies to be provided during the welcome week.
