What is BAföG and how do you receive it?

BAföG (Berufsausbildungsförderungsgesetz, Federal Training Assistance Act) is a type of government funding for students. Students receive half of their funding as a state grant and the other half as an interest-free government loan that must be repaid with favourable conditions after graduation. As a state-accredited university, the SRH Berlin University of Applied Sciences meets the requirements of BAföG. Eligibility for BAföG is assessed individually at the time of application and is based upon the income and assets of the student and their parents. BAföG is usually paid for the entire standard duration of studies.

Detailed information about BAföG is provided on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. To determine if you are eligible for BAföG, you can use the BAföG calculator.

You can apply for funding at the BAföG office of the Studierendenwerk Berlin:

Child benefits

Child benefit (Kindergeld) is one of the most important state benefits for families with children and is not counted towards BAföG. The parents apply for child benefit at the family benefits office (Familienkasse) when the child is born. It is paid without further conditions until the child reaches the age of majority. From the age of 18, child benefits are only granted to those who continue their education and take up training or studies. In this case, child benefit continues to be provided until 25 years of age. The Federal Employment Agency offers further information on this topic.

Acceptance merely depends on your motivation to study.

Education Fund from Brain Capital

Study first, pay later.

Brain Capital was founded in 2005 at the WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management. Today, Brain Capital is one of the largest providers of education funds. Repayments to the fund by alumni enable the next generation of students to complete their studies thanks to a “Reverse Generation Contract (UGV)”. Here's how it works:

  • The subsidy applies to the repayment of tuition fees and is independent of your parents’ income. Financial securities or guarantees are not required.
  • The repayment options to fund are flexible. Payments begin once you have started your career and your income has reached the minimum threshold. Repayments are compatible with career breaks, financing shortfalls or starting a family.
  • Brain Capital supports students with career coaching during and after their studies.
  • Apply for the education fund with curriculum vitae, high school diploma & Bachelor’s degree certificate, other credentials of university or professional achievements as well as the university’s confirmation of your study place.

IMPORTANT: Brain Capital only supports students who hold a general or subject-restricted higher education entrance qualification (with suitable grade average – please inquire at Brain Capital). For postgraduate studies, a Bachelor’s degree is required.

You can find more information on the website of the education fund.
